Win for Master Digital Design student at DDW Creative Jam

Student Minh Nguyên (track Interaction Design) was part of the winning team at this year’s Creative Jam - an annual challenge that takes place during Dutch Design Week.

This year, the event teamed up with a few Dutch broadcasters to take on one of the major challenges in the media world: the spread of fake news.

Participating students from several Dutch design programmes were asked to ideate on ways to arm young people with tools for them to identify misinformation and become more resilient to it.

Winning Idea

The initial ideas from the team winning team first revolved around implementing features directly in the used social media and a fake-news detector app. But the team quickly decided to take another route. “Considering that we wanted to help teenagers be more aware of fake news, we decided to go with a more physical approach,” says Minh.

In the end, they came up with FAIKTOK - an immersive gamifying installation that can be placed in public spaces such as schools. It’s a virtual maze and the only way out of it is if participants successfully detect fake news. If they pass, they move a step closer to the exit; if they get it wrong, they’re told why that piece of information is fake and are provided with tips on how to detect fake news.

Minh says they were lucky with the location of the challenge - Sint Lucas school - which was full of people who fit their target group. “It was really easy to meet teenagers and asked their thoughts about this topics.” With these insights, they went on to work on their winning idea.

The Creative Jam is an yearly event organised by Dutch Digital Design, Dutch Digital Agencies, Night of the Nerds , and Sint Lucas School.
